Overview
Registered in 1999 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Richland Royal Prince', 'Richland Royal Princess' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its medium green leaves with creamy white margins and a pronounced contrast between the dull upper surface and very shiny underside. The leaves measure 7.5 inches (19.1 cm) long and 4 inches (10.2 cm) wide, with eight vein pairs and a tapered base, while the margins are 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) wide and slightly rippled.
In the Garden
'Richland Royal Princess' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter, with green scapes rising 30 to 32 inches (76.2 to 81.3 cm) above the foliage. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its medium size makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shaded beds.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
