Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Gold Standard' registered in 1987, 'Richland Gold' is a small hosta distinguished by its green leaves with pale yellow margins, a reversal of the typical gold-centered, green-margined pattern of its parent. The plant forms a compact mound 14 inches (35.6 cm) tall and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with leaves 6 inches (15.2 cm) long and 4 inches (10.2 cm) wide bearing 6 to 8 vein pairs.
In the Garden
'Richland Gold' performs best in partial to dappled shade, where its pale yellow margins remain brightest; too much sun may scorch the leaf edges, while deep shade reduces margin color intensity. At maturity, it forms a low, spreading clump suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging along paths. Its small stature makes it an excellent choice for container plantings, and it pairs well with other small hostas, ferns, or shade-tolerant perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Richland Gold' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor for slugs in damp conditions and protect with barriers or bait as needed.
