Overview

Registered in 2004, *Hosta* 'Rhythm and Blues' is a small-sized cultivar derived from *Hosta* 'Shining Tot' (pod parent) with an unknown pollen parent. This cultivar is distinguished by its medium blue-green, ovate leaves with slightly rippled margins and a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, forming a compact, mound-like habit.

In the Garden

'Rhythm and Blues' reaches a mature height of approximately 9 inches (22.9 cm) with a spread of 24 inches (61.0 cm), making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging along pathways. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or dwarf astilbes. Its modest size also makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slugs and deer may occasionally feed on the foliage, the plant's moderate growth rate and compact form generally require minimal maintenance.
