Overview

Registered in 2000, this large hosta cultivar was developed from a cross between *H.* 'Sea Prize' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Maekawa' (pollen parent). Its most distinctive feature is the combination of blue-green leaves with wide, pure white, heavily rippled margins, often exhibiting medium green streaking within the leaf blade.

In the Garden

'Hosta 'Rhinestone Cowboy' reaches a mature spread of 36 inches (91.4 cm) and height of 23 inches (58.4 cm), with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its bold foliage. The glaucous scapes, reaching 27 to 30 inches (68.6 to 76.2 cm) in height, carry flowers typical of the genus.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the broad, tender leaves are attractive to both pests.
