Overview

Registered in 2016, *Hosta* 'Purple Mischief' is a medium-sized cultivar of unknown parentage distinguished by its highly glossy, blue-green foliage and deep purple flowers borne on purple scapes. The ovate leaves, measuring 7 inches (17.8 cm) long and 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide, exhibit a very shiny upper and lower surface with flat margins and a tapered base.

In the Garden

'Purple Mischief' forms an upright, moderate-growing clump reaching 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the leaf color remains truest. The purple scapes, rising 20 to 26 inches (50.8 to 66.0 cm) above the foliage, carry flowers that contrast well with the blue-green leaves; suitable companions include ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protection from slugs and deer may be necessary in garden settings.
