Overview
Registered in 2005 by P. & J. Ruh, this small variegated hosta resulted from a cross between *H.* 'Sweet Susan' and *H. rupifraga*. The cultivar is distinguished by its ovate, medium green leaves with flat margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a very shiny underside, combined with a one-sided flower arrangement on the scape.
In the Garden
'Hosta Purple Essence' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching approximately 12.5 inches (31.8 cm) in height and 27 inches (68.6 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its small size makes it suitable for rock gardens, woodland edges, or the front of shaded borders. Companion plantings may include ferns, heucheras, or small shade-tolerant perennials that complement its muted green foliage.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slug and deer resistance is not absolute, the slightly cupped and twisted leaf texture may offer some deterrence; standard protective measures are advisable in areas with heavy pressure.
