Overview
Registered in 2001, *Hosta* 'Pugie's Pride' is a small-sized cultivar of unknown pollen parentage, derived from *Hosta* 'Breeder's Choice'. It is visually distinguished by its ovate, lightly cupped, blue-green leaves that bear variable streaks of dark green and greenish yellow, bordered by a yellow, slightly rippled margin approximately 1.0 to 1.5 cm wide.
In the Garden
'Pugie's Pride' forms a slow-growing, mound-like clump reaching 11 inches (27.9 cm) in height and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container cultivation. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for blue-green hostas, where the leaf coloration remains stable and the yellow margins hold through autumn without melting out. Companion plants might include small ferns, heucheras, or shade-tolerant groundcovers that complement its compact habit.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry spells, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While 'Pugie's Pride' exhibits good leaf substance, standard slug and deer deterrents are advisable in gardens where these pests are prevalent.
