Overview
Registered in 2005, 'Prairie Lightning' is a large hosta cultivar of unknown pollen parent, with *H. 'Prairie Glow'* as the pod parent. It is visually distinctive for its tricolored leaves, which display green centers with gold margins and pale yellow, green, and gold streaking that extends into the heavily rippled margins; the leaf veins also show green, adding further complexity.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature spread of 34 inches (86.4 cm) and a height of 20 inches (50.8 cm), with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for hostas, and its large, textured leaves make it a suitable specimen for mid-border or woodland garden settings. The 24- to 36-inch (61.0 to 91.4 cm) scapes bear flowers that rise above the foliage, and the plant pairs well with other shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns or astilbes.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'Prairie Lightning' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate management may be required in areas where these pests are prevalent.
