Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Halcyon' registered in 1995, 'Peridot' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its variegated foliage: dark green margins frame a lighter leaf center, with a slightly shiny upper surface. The plant reaches 8 inches (20.3 cm) in height and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter, with leaves measuring 4 inches (10.2 cm) long and 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) wide, bearing seven pairs of veins and a rounded base.
In the Garden
'Peridot' performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, where its compact size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. At maturity, it forms a tidy mound approximately 12 inches across, pairing well with small ferns, heucheras, or shade-tolerant groundcovers. Its small stature and neat habit also suit trough gardens or miniature shade arrangements.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. Like most hostas, 'Peridot' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in gardens where these pests are prevalent.
