Overview

Registered in 2001 by P. & J. Ruh, 'Peerless' is a medium-sized variegated hosta of unknown parentage. Its most distinctive features are very shiny, lance-shaped leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins, combined with unusually tall scapes and long petioles that elevate the foliage well above the crown.

In the Garden

'Peerless' forms an upright clump reaching 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height and 44 inches (111.8 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. The tall scapes, which rise 48 to 53 inches (122–135 cm) above the plant, make this cultivar suitable for the middle to back of a shaded border where its glossy foliage and elevated flowers can be appreciated. It pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials that do not compete for attention with its strong vertical presence.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Peerless' may require protection from slugs and deer in typical hosta-growing zones.
