Overview
Registered in 2009 by Japanese breeder H. Abe, *Hosta* 'Pandemonium' is a small-sized cultivar notable for its blue-green leaves heavily streaked and mottled with white, a pattern derived from its pod parent *Hosta rupifraga*. The foliage is broadly ovate with cordate bases, flat margins, and a glaucous bloom on the undersides, while the scape reaches up to 8 inches (20.3 cm) in height.
In the Garden
Reaching a mature diameter of 12 inches (30.5 cm) and a height of 3.5 inches (8.9 cm), this slow-growing mound is suited to partial shade in typical hosta-growing zones. Its small size and variegated foliage make it appropriate for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders, where it pairs well with fine-textured ferns or small woodland perennials. It also performs well in containers due to its compact habit.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many variegated hostas, protect from slugs and snails, and note that deer may browse the foliage.
