Overview
Registered in 2000, *Hosta* 'Pacer' is a medium-sized cultivar of unknown parentage distinguished by its intensely shiny, blue-green leaves with dark green, slightly rippled margins and a prominent glaucous bloom on the undersides. The leaf blades measure 7 inches (17.8 cm) long by 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide, with nine pairs of veins and a rounded base, borne on purple-and-green scapes that reach up to 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height.
In the Garden
Forming a moderate-growing mound 12 inches (30.5 cm) tall and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, 'Pacer' performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, which require protection from strong afternoon sun to maintain leaf color and prevent scorch. Its compact, symmetrical habit suits the front of borders, woodland edges, or mass plantings, and pairs well with ferns, *Heuchera*, or shade-tolerant grasses. The moderate growth rate and medium size make it appropriate for mixed container plantings.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain evenly moist, well-drained soil, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Pacer' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
