Overview
Registered in 2000 by P. Banyai and S. DaPra, *Hosta* 'Orphan Child' is a small, mound-forming cultivar of unknown parentage. Its visual distinction lies in the medium green leaf margins surrounding a very shiny, variegated leaf surface, with cordate leaf bases and eight pairs of veins.
In the Garden
'Orphan Child' reaches a mature diameter of 30 inches (76.2 cm) and a height of 10 inches (25.4 cm), with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hostas, and its small size makes it suitable for rock gardens, container plantings, or the front of a shaded border. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and other small hosta cultivars.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Orphan Child' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed.
