Overview

Registered in 1999 as a sport of an unidentified parent, *Hosta* 'Old Glory' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its reversed coloration: dark green leaf margins surrounding a golden yellow center. The leaves are cordate at the base, measuring 8 inches (20.3 cm) long by 7.5 inches (19.1 cm) wide, with a dull upper surface and a very shiny underside, and feature 10 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter at maturity. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its medium size makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a groundcover beneath deciduous trees. The gold-and-green foliage pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials with contrasting leaf textures.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Old Glory' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
