Overview

Registered in 2002 by Japanese breeder H. Sugita, *Hosta* 'Okazaki' is a small variegated cultivar derived from *H. kikutii* and *H. gracillima*, both white-backed species. The plant is visually distinctive for its gracefully held, lance-shaped leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins, prominent white veins, and a waxy upper surface.

In the Garden

'Hosta' forms a compact, open mound reaching approximately 15 inches (38.1 cm) in diameter and 7.5 inches (19.1 cm) in height, with a slow growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its variegated foliage and white veins are most pronounced. Suitable companions include other small hostas, ferns, or woodland perennials; its small size also makes it appropriate for container cultivation in typical hosta-growing zones.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor regularly and apply control measures as needed.
