Overview
Registered in 2004, *Hosta* 'Northland Queen' is a large, mound-forming hybrid of *H.* 'Color Fantasy' and *H.* 'Silver Frost'. Its most distinctive feature is the highly unstable leaf variegation, which produces a variable mix of blue-green, golden yellow, and cream in streaks and mottling from leaf to leaf.
In the Garden
Reaching 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter and 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height, this slow-growing cultivar forms a dense mound suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones. The broad, nearly round leaves with cordate bases and moderate corrugation provide substantial textural contrast when paired with finer-leaved perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*. Its mid-season flowering scapes, reaching 29 to 30 inches (73.7 to 76.2 cm), bear glaucous blue-green stems.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor regularly and manage as needed.
