Overview

A sport of *Hosta* 'Second Wind' registered in 2008, 'North Wind' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with creamy white margins that gradually darken to medium green as the season progresses. This viridescent margin transition, combined with a broadly ovate, moderately cupped leaf form and glaucous bloom on the undersides, creates a two-toned effect that shifts in character from spring to summer.

In the Garden

'North Wind' forms a mound-like clump reaching approximately 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where the leaf coloration remains most stable, and is suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shade gardens. Its medium stature and broad leaves pair well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in texture or foliage color.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor regularly and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
