H. ‘Nesmith's Giant’

Overview

Registered in 1994 by E. Nesmith and later registered by P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Nesmith's Giant' is a large, variegated cultivar derived from a cross between *H. sieboldiana* and *H.* 'Elegans'. Its most distinctive feature is the combination of dark green leaf margins with a dull surface on both sides, a smooth texture, and a cordate leaf base, set against deep green scapes that rise well above the foliage.

Reaching a mature size of 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter and 26 inches (66.0 cm) in height, with a semi-upright habit, this hosta is well-suited to partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones. Its substantial leaves—11.25 inches (28.6 cm) long and 9.25 inches (23.5 cm) wide, with 13 vein pairs—make it an effective groundcover or specimen plant in woodland borders and shaded beds. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials, though its large size requires ample spacing.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. While generally robust, it may be susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so monitoring and protective measures are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
