Overview

Registered in 1986 by the American Hosta Society from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Nakaimo' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its medium dull green leaves with narrow, irregular yellow margins that mature to cream. The leaves are broadly ovate with small undulations along the margins, measuring 10.25 inches (26.0 cm) long by 6.25 inches (15.9 cm) wide, and bear 10 to 11 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

'Nakaimo' forms a substantial clump reaching 25 inches (63.5 cm) in height and 52 inches (132.1 cm) in diameter, with scapes rising 35 to 40 inches (88.9 to 101.6 cm) above the foliage. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the variegation remains most stable, and is well suited as a specimen or for the middle to back of shaded borders. Its large size makes it unsuitable for containers; companion plants include ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Nakaimo' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, requiring protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
