Overview

Registered in 2005 from unknown parentage, 'Mystery Mom' is a large hosta distinguished by its blue-green leaves broadly streaked with light green, medium green, dark green, yellow, greenish-yellow, and creamy white, with slightly rippled white margins. The foliage is nearly round with cordate bases, deeply corrugated, and heavily substanced, with a slightly shiny upper surface and glaucous bloom beneath.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms an upright clump reaching 26 inches (66.0 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in typical hosta-growing zones with partial to full shade, where its variegated foliage provides season-long interest. The substantial, deeply textured leaves make it suitable as a specimen or accent in shaded borders, woodland gardens, or mixed with ferns and other shade perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Mystery Mom' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate management may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
