Overview
Registered in 2009, *Hosta* 'Mossy Stone' is a giant variegated cultivar derived from *Hosta* 'Birchwood Elegance' (pod parent) with an unknown pollen parent. It is visually distinctive for its large, ovate leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins, a dull surface above and below, and a lightly cupped, corrugated texture.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial mound, reaching 52 inches (132.1 cm) in diameter and 28 inches (71.1 cm) in height. It is best suited to partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its large leaves and mounding habit create a bold groundcover effect. The plant’s short petioles and low, spreading form make it an effective specimen for the front of a border or as a solitary accent in a woodland garden; it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials. Its giant size precludes container cultivation for most gardeners.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage; monitor regularly and use appropriate controls if needed.
