Overview
Registered in 2008 by P. & J. Ruh, 'Mosel' is a medium-sized variegated hosta derived from a seedling of the Tardiana Group. Its most distinctive feature is the combination of very shiny, medium green leaves with slightly rippled margins and a notably short, blue-green scape that bears flowers at an unusually low height.
In the Garden
'Mosel' forms an upright clump reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 23 inches (58.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. The ovate leaves, measuring 6.75 inches (17.1 cm) long and 4.75 inches (12.1 cm) wide, are lightly cupped with flat bases and slightly wavy margins; they are very shiny on the upper surface and dull beneath. This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its compact, upright habit makes it suitable for the front of borders or as a specimen in small garden spaces.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first growing season, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Like most hostas, 'Mosel' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
