Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'August Moon' registered in 2005 by P. & J. Ruh, 'Moon over Lake Erie' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its dark green leaf centers and contrasting greenish yellow margins. The broad, rippled edges, measuring 0.5 to 1.75 inches (1.3 to 1.9 cm) wide, provide a bright border that the registrants noted as a "brilliant colored edge."
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a mound 19 inches (48.3 cm) tall and 41 inches (104.1 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to light shade, where the gold margins hold their color without scorching. The ovate, heavily corrugated leaves with cordate bases and 10 vein pairs create substantial texture; companion plants with fine foliage, such as ferns or *Heuchera*, provide contrast.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, particularly during dry spells, as the large leaves are susceptible to wilting. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges; monitor for slug damage, which can disfigure the foliage, and for deer browsing in areas where these animals are present.
