Overview
Registered in 2014 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Sunset Grooves', 'Monster Ears' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its deeply cupped, very shiny green leaves with flat margins and variegated coloration. The plant reaches approximately 13.75 inches (34.9 cm) in height and 19.75 inches (50.2 cm) in diameter, with elliptic leaves 6.25 inches (15.9 cm) long and 4.75 inches (12.1 cm) wide bearing seven vein pairs.
In the Garden
This cultivar's strong, cupped leaves and noted sun resistance make it suitable for positions receiving more light than typical for hostas, though it performs best in typical hosta-growing conditions with morning sun and afternoon shade. Its small size and moderate growth rate suit the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings, where its deeply cupped foliage and very shiny upper surface provide textural contrast alongside smaller ferns, heucheras, or dwarf grasses. The green scape reaches up to 19.75 inches (50.2 cm) in height.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, cupped leaves offer some resistance to slugs and deer, though monitoring is advisable in high-pressure areas.
