Overview

Registered in 2013 by an unnamed hybridizer, *Hosta* 'Mint Condition' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with wide, pure white margins that vary from 0.25 to 1.75 inches (0.6–4.4 cm) and often streak toward the center, producing a tricolored effect. The parentage is unknown, but the leaf surface is slightly shiny above with a glaucous bloom beneath, and the margins are heavily rippled.

In the Garden

'Mint Condition' forms a mound-like clump 19 inches (48.3 cm) tall and 36 inches (91.4 cm) wide, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, where its variegated foliage remains stable. The green scapes, 22 to 27 inches (55.9–68.6 cm) tall, carry pale lavender flowers in midsummer. This cultivar works well as a specimen or in mixed shade borders, paired with ferns or shade-tolerant perennials; its medium size suits it for the middle of a border or as a groundcover in woodland gardens.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs may damage the foliage, and deer are known to browse the leaves, so protective measures are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
