Overview
Registered in 1997 as a sport of an unnamed parent, 'Minnesota Nice' is a small variegated hosta distinguished by its dark green, slightly rippled leaf margins and glossy undersides. The leaves measure 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) long by 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide, with six vein pairs and rounded bases.
In the Garden
This fast-growing cultivar forms a compact mound 14 inches (35.6 cm) tall and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for small garden spaces or container culture. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other small woodland perennials. The 24- to 32-inch (61.0–81.3 cm) scapes bear lavender flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
