Overview

Registered in 2006 from unknown parentage, 'Mini Mouse' is a miniature hosta distinguished by its exceptionally small stature—smaller than *Hosta venusta*—and its variegated foliage of medium grey-green leaves with flat margins. The plant forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching only 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) in height and 3 inches (7.6 cm) in diameter, with broadly ovate leaves measuring 1 inch (2.5 cm) long and 0.75 inch (1.9 cm) wide, each bearing four vein pairs. The scapes rise 9 to 12 inches (22.9 to 30.5 cm) above the foliage and produce flowers described as almost blue-purple.

In the Garden

'Mini Mouse' is suited to shaded or partially shaded sites typical of hosta-growing zones, where its diminutive size makes it an ideal subject for troughs, rock gardens, or the front edge of a border. Its slow to moderate growth rate and compact habit allow it to be paired with other miniature perennials such as small ferns, *Sedum* species, or dwarf *Heuchera* cultivars. The plant performs well in containers, where its small scale can be appreciated at close range.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in containers, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitoring and protective measures are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
