Overview
Registered in 1982 by P. Aden, 'Mikado' is a giant variegated hosta resulting from a cross between *Hosta montana* 'Aureomarginata' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Big Sam' (pollen parent). The cultivar is visually defined by its substantial, glossy leaves with green margins and a broad, lighter center, reaching dimensions of 22 inches (55.9 cm) long and 16 inches (40.6 cm) wide.
In the Garden
'Mikado' forms a large, mounding clump approximately 55 inches (139.7 cm) in diameter and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in height, making it suitable as a specimen or focal point in shaded borders. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its scale. The substantial leaves provide textural contrast against finer-foliaged plants.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through appropriate barriers or repellents.
