Overview

Registered in 1999 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Prairie Glow', 'Midwest Magic' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with golden yellow margins. The leaves measure 8 inches (20.3 cm) long by 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide, with 12 to 13 vein pairs, and feature a cordate base, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a glaucous bloom beneath. The golden yellow margins are 0.75 inches (1.9 cm) wide and contrast with dark green, slightly rippled leaf edges.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a mound-like clump reaching 21 inches (53.3 cm) in height and 47 inches (119.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the leaf color is most pronounced. The green scapes, 18 to 28 inches (45.7 to 71.1 cm) tall, bear lavender flowers in midsummer. 'Midwest Magic' pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials; its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts or woodland gardens but not for small containers.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage accordingly.
