Overview
Registered in 2004, *Hosta* 'Metropolis' is a giant, self-pollinated seedling of *Hosta montana* 'Chirifu'. It is distinguished by its very large, variegated leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins and a dull upper surface, combined with exceptionally tall scapes that can reach 70 to 75 inches (177.8 to 190.5 cm).
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a fast-growing, mound-like clump reaching 28 inches (71.1 cm) in height and 70 inches (177.8 cm) in diameter. Its substantial ovate leaves, 18 inches (45.7 cm) long and 11 inches (27.9 cm) wide with 13 to 15 vein pairs, make it a prominent specimen for part-shade to shade borders. Given its giant size, it is not suited for containers and is best paired with other large perennials such as ferns or *Rodgersia* in woodland settings.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
