Overview
Registered in 1999, 'Metallic Sheen' is a giant hosta resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Sum and Substance' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Elegans' (pollen parent). The cultivar is distinguished by its large, blue-green leaves with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, which imparts a muted, metallic appearance.
In the Garden
'Metallic Sheen' forms a substantial mound 28 inches (71.1 cm) tall and 60 inches (152.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, where its glaucous foliage retains its color. The broad, cordate leaves—14 inches (35.6 cm) long and 10 inches (25.4 cm) wide with 14 to 16 vein pairs—provide a bold textural contrast when paired with fine-leaved perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*. Its size makes it suitable as a specimen or background plant in larger borders.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, it may be susceptible to slug damage; deer browsing is also a potential concern in typical hosta-growing zones.
