Overview
Registered in 1996 by P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Maya' is a sport of *H.* 'Fortunei Albopicta' distinguished by its small, mound-like habit and yellow leaves edged with a green, slightly rippled margin. The leaf blade is dull on both surfaces, with a rounded base, seven vein pairs, and a green border approximately 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) wide.
In the Garden
This compact cultivar reaches a mature size of 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and 11.5 inches (29.2 cm) in diameter, with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and its small stature makes it suitable for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. Companion plants include ferns, *Heuchera*, and small *Carex* species.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may cause damage; monitor and manage as needed.
