Overview

Registered in 2004, *Hosta* 'Maui Blue Surf' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from a streaked F-1 seedling of *H.* 'Lochness' (pod parent) with an unknown pollen parent. Its visual distinction lies in the combination of blue-green leaves with gold margins and unstable, streaked variegation of varying yellow shades, set against a dull upper surface and glaucous bloom beneath.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a moderate-growing, mound-like clump reaching 26 inches (66 cm) in diameter and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous bloom and leaf coloration are most pronounced. Suitable companions include ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its medium size makes it appropriate for border fronts or mixed shade beds.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry spells, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
