Overview
Registered in 2003 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Aoki', 'Marla' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its unusual leaf coloration: a white to cream center with dark green veins, framed by a wide, dark green, heavily rippled margin. The ovate, twisted leaves measure 5.5 inches (14.0 cm) long by 3.25 inches (8.3 cm) wide, with seven vein pairs and a slightly shiny upper surface.
In the Garden
'Marla' forms an upright, moderate-growing clump reaching 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 19 inches (48.3 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of a border or a rock garden. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for variegated hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other small woodland perennials. Its compact size also makes it a candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'Marla' may be susceptible to slug damage; monitor foliage and manage as needed.
