Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek, *Hosta* 'Maekawa' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from a select form of *H. hypoleuca*. It is visually distinctive for its broadly ovate, blue-green leaves with heavily rippled, medium green margins, a dull upper surface, and a deep glaucous bloom on the underside.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a slow-growing, mound-like clump reaching approximately 17 inches (43.2 cm) in height and 50 inches (127 cm) in diameter. It is best suited to partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its substantial size makes it appropriate for mid-border or as a specimen in woodland gardens.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While generally low-maintenance, monitor for slug and deer damage, which can affect foliage.
