Overview
Registered in 2005, *Hosta* 'Made from Scratch' is a large cultivar of unknown pollen parentage, with *H.* 'Dorothy Benedict' as the pod parent. It is visually distinctive for its broad, nearly round leaves that combine a blue-green center with multiple shades of green and a wide, slightly rippled margin that transitions from white to pale yellow.
In the Garden
'Made from Scratch' forms a substantial clump reaching 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous bloom on the leaf undersides and the light-colored margins are most pronounced. The heavy substance and cupped, corrugated leaves make it a robust specimen for the middle of a shaded border or as a focal point in a woodland garden; its large size precludes container use for most gardeners.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. The thick, heavy-textured leaves offer moderate resistance to slugs, though standard preventative measures are advisable in persistently wet conditions.
