Overview
Registered in 2012, *Hosta* 'Maddren' is a giant, upright-growing cultivar of unknown parentage (open-pollinated) that is distinguished by its intensely blue-green, broadly ovate leaves with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces and slightly rippled margins. The plant produces heavy, verticulate flower clusters on tall, blue-green scapes, with long, arching pod scapes persisting after bloom.
In the Garden
With a mature spread of 55 inches (139.7 cm) and height of 32 inches (81.3 cm), 'Maddren' requires substantial space and performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for blue-leaved hostas. Its large, corrugated foliage and upright habit make it a strong specimen plant for woodland borders or as a focal point in shaded beds; companion plants should be low-growing or fine-textured to avoid competition. The fast growth rate allows it to reach full size relatively quickly.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The glaucous bloom is easily marred by overhead watering or handling; slug and deer damage should be anticipated and managed in typical hosta-growing zones.
