Overview
Registered in 1998 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Lunar Magic', 'Lunar Night' is a large, variegated cultivar distinguished by its dark green leaf margins and dull-surfaced foliage. The leaves are cordate at the base, measuring 9 inches (22.9 cm) long and 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide, with 9 to 10 vein pairs.
In the Garden
'Lunar Night' forms a substantial clump reaching 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its dark green margins contrast effectively with lighter center coloration. This large hosta is well-suited for mid-border positions or as a specimen plant in woodland gardens, pairing naturally with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor foliage regularly and take protective measures if needed.
