Overview
Registered in 1989 by M. Seaver, 'Lucy Vitols' is a large hosta of unknown parentage distinguished by its broad, cupped leaves with green centers and gold margins. The leaf blades reach 10 inches (25.4 cm) in length and 9 inches (22.9 cm) in width, with 11 pairs of veins, and the margins are described as green-yellow-green.
In the Garden
'Lucy Vitols' forms a substantial clump 16 inches (40.6 cm) in diameter and 10 inches (25.4 cm) tall, with scapes rising 16 to 18 inches (40.6 to 45.7 cm) above the foliage. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its large, bold leaves make it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders. Companion plants such as ferns, astilbes, or heucheras provide textural contrast.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Lucy Vitols' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
