Overview
Registered in 1990 by C. Harstad and I. Pope, 'Lucille Simpers' is a large blue-green hosta with undulating leaf margins and 11 to 12 vein pairs per leaf. Its parentage is unknown, but the cultivar is visually distinctive for its broad, heavily textured blue-green foliage and substantial mature dimensions.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature spread of 50 inches (127 cm) and a height of 17 inches (43 cm), with scapes rising to 33 inches (84 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of blue-leaved hostas, where its leaf color remains truest. The large, textured leaves make it suitable as a specimen or in mass plantings with ferns, astilbes, or other shade perennials; its size precludes container use.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
