Overview

A sport of *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance' registered in 1999, 'Lodestar' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its green leaves with wide, rippled, greenish-yellow margins. The leaf surface is very shiny on both sides, and the margins are notably heavy and rippled, creating a textured appearance.

In the Garden

'Lodestar' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter. Its small stature and glossy foliage make it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Lodestar' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed in the garden.
