Overview
Registered in 2011 from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Libra' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its broadly ovate, blue-green leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins and a glaucous bloom on the undersides. The foliage is moderately corrugated with 8 to 9 vein pairs, and the plant forms a notably pleasing, upright clump that holds its heavy bloom well above the leaves late into the season.
In the Garden
*Hosta* 'Libra' reaches 19 inches (48.3 cm) in height and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter, with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, and its upright habit and late-season persistence make it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in woodland gardens. Companion plants include ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its medium size is not ideal for small containers.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, especially in the first growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The glaucous leaf coating may deter some slugs, but standard slug and deer control measures are advisable in areas with heavy pressure.
