Overview
Registered in 1986 by E. Nesmith and the American Hosta Society, 'Leviathan' is a giant variegated hosta resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Fortunei Gigantea' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Blue Frost' (pollen parent). Its leaves measure 12.5 inches (31.8 cm) long by 10.25 inches (26.0 cm) wide, with medium green margins and 13 pairs of veins, creating a broad, substantial leaf surface.
In the Garden
'Leviathan' reaches giant mature dimensions, forming a clump that can exceed 4 feet in width when established. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas of this size, and benefits from protection from afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch. Its large, variegated foliage pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in texture or color.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, as giant hostas are susceptible to drought stress. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor regularly and employ control measures if needed.
