Overview

Registered in 1995 by an unknown breeder, *Hosta* 'Lakeside Doodad' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its narrow, lanceolate leaves with pure white centers and dark green margins. The leaf blades measure 5 inches (12.7 cm) in length and 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) in width, featuring three vein pairs, a rounded base, and a slightly shiny upper surface with a dull underside.

In the Garden

This compact hosta forms a mound 6 inches (15.2 cm) tall and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the white leaf centers remain most stable. Its small size makes it suitable for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders, and it pairs well with other small shade perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*. The red scapes, reaching 8 to 10 inches (20.3 to 25.4 cm) in height, add a subtle accent above the foliage.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
