Overview
Registered in 1995 by an unknown hybridizer, 'Lakeside Cogwheel' is a small hosta distinguished by its blue-green leaves with broad, yellow-gold margins and slightly rippled edges. The leaf surfaces are dull on both sides, and the cordate leaf bases contribute to a compact, mound-like habit.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 20 inches (50.8 cm) and a height of 4 inches (10.2 cm), making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or miniature sedges. Its small size and tidy mound also make it an appropriate choice for trough gardens or shaded patio pots.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and manage as needed.
