Overview

Registered in 2003 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Lakeside Shore Master', 'Lakeside Beach Captain' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its broad, creamy white leaf margins surrounding a medium blue-green center. The leaves are nearly round with cordate bases, lightly cupped, and bear a glaucous bloom on the upper surface, while the scapes reach 20 to 22 inches (50.8–55.9 cm) in height and produce green flowers.

In the Garden

Reaching 38 inches (96.5 cm) in diameter and 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height with a moderate growth rate, this cultivar forms a substantial mound suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. Its broad, variegated foliage provides strong contrast when paired with ferns, heucheras, or finer-textured shade perennials. It is not suited for containers due to its large mature size.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate management may be necessary in typical hosta-growing zones.
