Overview

Registered in 2003, *Hosta* 'Lac de Bretaye' is a small cultivar derived from *Hosta* 'Hazel' as the pod parent, with the pollen parent unknown. It is visually distinctive for its intensely blue-green, lance-shaped leaves with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, a moderately wavy margin, and a fine, penciled white edge that appears under suitable growing conditions.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 6 inches (15.2 cm) in height and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It is noted for retaining good blue coloration even in nearly full sun, making it more adaptable to brighter sites than many blue-leaved hostas. Its small size and elegant, wavy foliage suit it for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings, where it pairs well with fine-textured shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
