Overview

Registered in 2001 by Japanese breeder H. Sugita, *Hosta* 'Kyoto' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar notable for its pendulant flowers that display an unusual color splash of purple with a white edge. The plant forms a slow-growing, mound-like clump reaching 11 inches (27.9 cm) in height and 21.5 inches (54.6 cm) in diameter, with ovate leaves featuring medium green, slightly rippled margins, a cordate base, and eight prominent vein pairs.

In the Garden

*Hosta* 'Kyoto' performs best in partial to full shade, where its moderate leaf folding and waviness are most pronounced. With a mature spread of approximately 22 inches, it suits the middle of a shaded border or a woodland garden setting, pairing well with ferns, *Heuchera*, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its compact size also makes it suitable for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. Like most hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage, requiring protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
