Overview

Registered in 2000 by T. Kurasawa (with P. Ruh as registrant), *Hosta* 'Kokuryu' is a small, fast-growing cultivar of unknown parentage. Its variegated leaves feature light green, flat margins and a dull upper surface with a very shiny underside, set on red-spotted scapes.

In the Garden

Reaching a mature diameter of 19 inches (48.3 cm) and height of 13 inches (33.0 cm), 'Kokuryu' forms a dense mound suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and small woodland perennials. Its compact size and rapid growth make it an effective groundcover in shaded areas.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While generally low-maintenance, monitor for slug and deer damage in susceptible gardens.
