It is visually distinctive for its medium green leaves with broad, greenish yellow margins that are slightly rippled, and for its green and burgundy scapes.

It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold margins remain most vivid, and is suitable for borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen plant. Its large size makes it less suited for containers; companion plants include ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
